What will this course cover?

The course title is US History: How the United States Transitioned from 13 Colonies to World Superpower. We will emphasize four main stories that illustrate how the United States became globally dominant—not just militarily, but economically, politically, and culturally as well.

  • Colonization and Liberty explores how the United States claimed its independence.

  • From Slavery to Civil Rights examines the legal transformation brought about by the Civil War and gradual cultural conversion to equal rights.

  • Economic Innovation emphasizes major economic transitions as the U.S. economy shifted from agriculture to industry to services.

  • US Expansion Abroad traces the expansion and deployment of American power in the world, from the War with the Sioux to Iraq.

Who is teaching this course?

Krista Guardino is a homeschool alumna and has degree in history from the University of California, Berkeley, where she wrote her thesis on religious dissidence in the Soviet Union during the Cold War era. She has eight years of teaching experience and loves to engage students in lively discussions about historical events and how they shaped the present. Krista also works for a startup innovating the college textbook, so she’s on the cutting edge of college education in history, political science, and writing.

How will students be evaluated?

  • Weekly quizzes help the student think critically about the readings and lectures. These low-stake quizzes use a mix of short-essay responses and multiple choice questions to test the student's understanding of themes and narratives and evaluate their writing abilities.

  • Students will complete short essays and assignments that will prepare them for two major historical papers consisting of original argumentation and primary-source research.

  • The student will also be given a participation grade based on discussion with the instructor and other students.

  • Each student will be graded according to their registered grade level.
